Call of Duty: World at War

Scans from the newest issue of the UK's Official Xbox Magazine have surfaced online, confirming earlier rumors that Call of Duty 5 will indeed take the series back to World War II.

Now titled Call of Duty: World at War, Treyarch (who developed the underwhelming Call of Duty 3) will handle development duties and explore "the darkest corners" of WWII. They intend to do this by pitting players against the Japanese, whose tactics should be more ferocious and shocking than anything seen in previous CoD titles. Players will control both the US and Russian forces in the fight, with the Russians invading Germany.

The multiplayer perks first found in Call of Duty 4 will return, more period-specific of course, along with new weapons including a flamethrower that can set the environment ablaze. Perhaps most importantly, Treyarch has had close to two years to develop CoD: WaW (versus 11 months for CoD3), with the Xbox 360 version acting as the "lead" version although specific teams are working separately on all versions.
